Daiquiri Bay wins Ebor in three-way sprint finish
Daiquiri Bay won the Ebor Handicap at York after edging Hopewell Rock and Opportunity in a close three-way finish. The victory secured the £300,000 first prize and an automatic place in the Melbourne Cup, underlining the gelding’s strong season in Europe’s richest handicap.
The 10-1 chance, ridden by Rossa Ryan and trained by Alan King, beat 22 rivals over one mile and six furlongs, with Hopewell Rock second after a photo finish and Opportunity third. Daiquiri Bay had previously won at Newmarket and Royal Ascot this year, while pre-race favourite Love Me Tender finished 10th.
