A drug-resistant fungal infection called Candida auris has spread to 27 US states, with over 3,437 clinical cases recorded so far in 2026, according to provisional data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Health officials are monitoring the spread closely because the fungus can cause serious, sometimes fatal infections and is often resistant to standard antifungal treatments, posing a particular risk to hospitalised and immunocompromised patients.

The CDC figures, current as of the week ending 25 July, show California bearing the heaviest burden with 873 cases, roughly a quarter of the national total. Other states reporting high case numbers include Texas (433), Tennessee (283), Ohio (279) and Georgia (193), with additional cases confirmed across the remaining reporting states.
