Danish students join European protest wave against education funding cuts
Thousands of Danish students protested against a government proposal to restrict student stipends, arguing the changes would undermine access to education. The demonstration in Copenhagen joined a wider wave of youth protests across Europe, where concerns have also included housing and the cost of living.
Organisers said up to 13,000 people marched to parliament on Monday, while student associations reported about 40,000 students striking at 57 schools. The allowance has been available to students over 18 since 1970; under the proposal, around 14,000 students would lose support and 8,000 would receive less, based on their parents’ income. The government says the changes would help free funds for defence spending.
