Darfur survivors vow to tell story of those killed after Sudan camp attacks
Survivors of the Rapid Support Forces’ assault on Zamzam camp in Sudan’s Darfur region are determined to preserve the memory of the people and community lost. Their accounts describe how a place that had sheltered displaced families for years was devastated after months of siege, hunger and violence.
Established in 2004, Zamzam was once home to hundreds of thousands and had a daily market and schools. Famine was confirmed there in August 2024; the RSF captured the camp in April 2025 after a three-day assault that began on 11 April. A UN human rights report recorded at least 1,013 civilians killed, including 319 summarily executed, and documented sexual violence; tens of thousands fled.
In short
- Survivors want Zamzam’s community and dead to be remembered.
- Famine preceded the RSF’s April 2025 assault.
- The UN documented at least 1,013 civilian deaths.
