The penultimate weekend of summer brings a varied slate of specialty cinema releases, led by horror comedy Buddy, road-trip comedy Idiots and Korean zombie thriller Colony. The openings matter as distributors test audience demand for independent, genre and event films across a relatively broad range of cinemas, alongside several more limited documentary and arthouse releases.

Roadside Attractions is releasing Buddy on 1,258 screens; the Sundance-premiered film, voiced by Keegan-Michael Key, has an 87% Rotten Tomatoes score. IFC’s Idiots opens on 1,100 screens, while Yeon Sang-ho’s Colony arrives on 411 and Well Go USA’s Power Rangers-linked Legend of the White Dragon plays on 596 screens as a limited event release. Focus Features’ romantic comedy Finding Emily opens at 678 locations, while films including The Sun Never Sets and Filipiñana begin with more selective engagements.
