Dave Bautista is now confirmed to be in talks to join Prime Video's God of War series as Kratos, taking over after original star Ryan Hurst tore his bicep on set and had to withdraw from the role. The report, originating with Variety, would give the video-game adaptation a significant boost in profile, as Bautista brings a decade of high-profile film work despite this being his first ongoing television series regular role.

Bautista is best known for Guardians of the Galaxy, Glass Onion and Blade Runner 2049, and has previously starred in Prime Video titles including The Wrecking Crew and the My Spy films; before his acting career he spent years as a WWE wrestler. The God of War series, created by Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica), also features Callum Vinson, Teresa Palmer, Max Parker, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Mandy Patinkin and Ed Skrein, and is based on the Sony video game franchise, with the latest instalment, God of War: Ragnarok, currently available on PS5.

Prime Video is developing a live-action series based on the God of War video games, following the Norse mythology-inspired warrior Kratos. Ryan Hurst had originally been cast in the lead role but had to step back after injuring his bicep during filming, leaving the part open. The show is being made by Ronald D. Moore, known for Battlestar Galactica, and also stars Callum Vinson, Teresa Palmer, Max Parker, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Mandy Patinkin and Ed Skrein.

Dave Bautista is now reported to be in talks to take over the role. He is a former WWE wrestler turned actor, recognisable from films such as Guardians of the Galaxy, Blade Runner 2049 and Glass Onion, though he has not previously held a lead role in an ongoing television series. His potential casting is seen as significant because of the profile he could bring to the adaptation of one of Sony's best-known video game franchises, the latest instalment of which, God of War: Ragnarok, is currently available on PS5.
