Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine has defended the thrash metal band's history of lineup changes, telling Fox Radio host Terrence Long that the number of musicians who have genuinely recorded with the group over nearly 50 years is "really pretty small" compared with perceptions of high turnover. He argued that thrash metal is "a young man's game" and that not everyone retains the same drive over time, while noting he would have preferred a stable lineup throughout. The comments come as the band promotes its newly released self-titled album, billed as its final studio record, ahead of a farewell tour.

Mustaine also explained the reasoning behind the farewell tour, citing ongoing problems with his hand rather than any desire to quit, saying he does not want to perform if he cannot give his best on stage. He expressed frustration with bandmates who "take the easy way out" without a genuine physical reason, insisting his own live performances remain at "100%". Megadeth has announced a European leg of the tour, "Breakout: Hibernation Of The Nations", a 24-date arena run beginning 9 March 2027 in Belfast and concluding 13 April 2027 in Lisbon.
