David Buik: The City needs a bit more fun
David Buik, an 82-year-old City veteran, has spent more than six decades working in London’s financial district and has chronicled his career in a new book, *Money Markets Mayhem*. His experience offers a view of how the City has changed through major economic shifts, including the 1970s inflation, the end of exchange controls and the 2008 financial crisis.
Buik began as a bank clerk on 17 September 1962, after leaving school with poor A-level results. He calls the abolition of exchange controls in 1979 the biggest change of his career and also witnessed the 1986 Big Bang, whose 40th anniversary was recently marked. He recalls a more formal workplace, where he was once sent home for wearing the wrong shirt and tie; his first monthly pay was £39 17s 6d.
