David Lynch owned the rights to a movie for 35 years. He didn’t direct it out of the fear of making it too “weird”

Far Out ·

David Lynch owned the rights to a play adaptation for about 35 years but chose not to direct it, saying he feared he would make the story too weird. He gave the script to his collaborator Duwayne Dunham, whose different sensibilities, Lynch felt, might better suit the material.

The film, titled *Legend of the Happy Worker*, was eventually made by Dunham and emerged in 2025 with little fanfare. Actor Thomas Haden Church said in 2019 that filming had finished the previous autumn and described the project as genre-bending; the article notes that Lynch’s name was attached to it as a presenter.

In short

  • Lynch passed the directing role to Duwayne Dunham.
  • He said his style might make the story too weird.
  • *Legend of the Happy Worker* appeared in 2025.
