Former Wales captain Jonathan Davies has called for the Welsh Rugby Union board to resign, arguing it has failed to improve the game during its three years in office. His intervention increases pressure on the WRU amid wider criticism from business figures and Swansea politicians, and reflects concern over the governing body’s proposed restructuring of professional rugby in Wales.

The 11-member board has been without chair Richard Collier-Keywood since March 2026, while chief executive Abi Tierney remains under calls to leave. The WRU plans to reduce the number of professional teams from four to three by 2028, licensing Cardiff and Dragons while leaving Scarlets and Ospreys competing for the remaining west Wales place; both clubs have opposed aspects of the plan. Davies said Welsh rugby’s economy and grassroots game were suffering and urged an interim board to restore trust and create a sustainable future.
