Welsh track cyclist Emma Finucane made history at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow by winning a fourth gold medal, becoming the first cyclist ever to claim four track titles at a single Games. The 23-year-old from Carmarthen capped an extraordinary day by carrying the Welsh flag at the closing ceremony, having begun competing at 9am and secured her final victory in the keirin some twelve hours later. Her achievement surpasses even legends of the sport such as Sir Chris Hoy, in whose namesake velodrome the Games were held, along with Victoria Pendleton, Jason Kenny and Anna Meares, none of whom won four titles at one Commonwealth Games.

Finucane's golds came in the team sprint, individual sprint, 1,000m time trial and keirin, with the team sprint won alongside Rhian Edmunds and Lowri Thomas. She overcame strong competition, including triple Olympic champion Ellesse Andrews, and admitted feeling the pressure after narrowly progressing through her keirin semi-final. The feat also makes her the most successful Welsh woman in Commonwealth Games history, contributing almost half of Wales' gold medal tally as the nation secured 31 medals overall in Glasgow.
