Warner Bros.' superhero film Supergirl has been overtaken on HBO Max's global rankings by Practical Magic, the 1998 fantasy classic starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, just days after Supergirl's streaming debut. The setback adds to a difficult year for the DC Universe franchise, which had hoped Supergirl might replicate the goodwill generated by earlier releases such as Superman, especially as it heads into an uncertain period with the smaller-scale Clayface next and the higher-profile Man of Tomorrow not arriving until next year.

Directed by Craig Gillespie and starring Milly Alcock as the title character alongside Jason Momoa as Lobo, Supergirl cost $186 million to make but grossed only $126 million worldwide, making it one of the year's biggest sci-fi box-office failures alongside Masters of the Universe. According to FlixPatrol, it currently sits second in HBO Max's global rankings, behind Practical Magic, which is being boosted by renewed interest ahead of its own sequel, Practical Magic 2, released on 10 September to mixed reviews. Supergirl itself holds a middling 53% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising Alcock's performance while calling the story a familiar origin tale.
