‘Dead Drop’ is a contained horror film about eight mismatched strangers trapped in a freight elevator that becomes a gateway to increasingly grotesque and cosmic horrors. Writer-director Ned Crowley sustains momentum with sharp pacing, gore, bawdy humour and frequent twists, though the film’s archetypal characters make it more entertaining than emotionally involving.

The 88-minute film draws on the enclosed paranoia of Cube and the group dynamics of The Breakfast Club, while incorporating trap doors, flooding blood and gruesome deaths. Its single set is used imaginatively through production design and inventive camera work, but the increasingly far-fetched premise and humour occasionally undermine the horror, and the direction becomes predictable before the conclusion.
