Experts note that hot late-summer weather accelerates bacterial growth and spread through vapour from air-conditioning systems. Legionnaires' disease, a serious form of pneumonia, is not contagious and is not spread via tap water, but poses greater risk to those aged 65 and over or with underlying conditions such as diabetes or COPD.
