San Sebastian International Film Festival has selected 14 first and second feature films for its New Directors section, highlighting emerging filmmakers from 13 countries. Jaime Lorente’s directorial debut, The Bad Son, will open the programme, while British director Billy Lumby’s Florid will close it, with all titles competing for the Kutxabank-New Directors Award.

The festival’s 74th edition runs in northern Spain from 18 to 26 September. The Bad Son follows an 11-year-old boy sent to live with his grandmother after his father disappears, while Florid centres on a young musician managing mental health difficulties, medication and drug use; the line-up also includes films from directors in Germany, Mexico, Norway, Japan, Kazakhstan and Iran.
