‘Defying Democracy’: How Political Satirist Randy Rainbow Sang His Way Into His First Emmy Performer Nomination

The Hollywood Reporter · 3 hours ago

Political satirist Randy Rainbow has earned his first Emmy nomination for outstanding performer in a shortform comedy or drama series, recognising the political-parody music videos he creates for his YouTube series, The Randy Rainbow Show. He is also nominated for outstanding short form comedy, drama or variety series, taking his total number of Emmy nominations since 2019 to six, though this marks the first time he has been recognised specifically as a performer rather than for the show as a whole.

In an interview, Rainbow described the milestone as "a big freaking deal" after years of using the videos to showcase himself as a performer. He explained that each parody now takes several weeks to produce with help from a dedicated musical team, including music producer and vocal arranger Michael J. Moritz Jr, who is himself nominated in the series category, and a live band of Broadway musicians. Rainbow also discussed his creative process, noting that lyrics usually come before the choice of track, citing his "Defying Democracy" parody of "Defying Gravity" as an example, and reflected on the limited but meaningful impact of political comedy on audiences across the political spectrum.
