Democrat Denise Powell wins election to U.S. House in Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District

Democrat Denise Powell won Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District seat in the US House, defeating Republican Brinker Harding. Her victory matters because it flips a district Democrats had targeted for several election cycles.

The district is among the few that elected a Republican to Congress in 2024 while also backing Kamala Harris for president. Powell is a Democratic activist and co-founded Women Who Run Nebraska, a political action committee that recruits and supports female candidates; Harding has served on the Omaha City Council since 2017. The Associated Press called the race at 11:57 p.m. Eastern time.
