New Jersey's Democratic governor, Mikie Sherrill, has announced that around 6,600 non-citizens were mistakenly registered to vote due to a software error in the state's motor vehicle system, with some having gone on to cast ballots in previous elections. Sherrill said the fault occurred in New Jersey's Motor Vehicle Commission system between June 2023 and June 2024, nearly three years before she took office, and affected people who had answered "no" when asked via a keypad whether they were US citizens while applying for a driver's licence or identification card. Despite indicating they were not citizens, these individuals were still registered to vote; the state says fewer than 400 of them actually voted in elections, and all 6,600 have since been removed from the voter rolls.
