Democrats aim to retake Senate from Republicans as Americans go to polls
Democrats are poised to regain control of the US Senate after projected wins in several states that rarely elect Democratic senators. The results mark a sharp reversal from two years ago and suggest voters have turned against Donald Trump, while giving Democrats greater power to challenge his agenda.
James Talarico won Texas’s first Democratic Senate race since 1988, and Annie Andrews was projected to win in South Carolina, where Democrats have not won a Senate race since 1998. Roy Cooper won in North Carolina and Sherrod Brown returned in Ohio; Democrats also secured Georgia and New Hampshire, while counting or calls remained outstanding in several states. They needed four net seats to take the chamber and still depended on holding seats in Michigan and Minnesota. Senate control would let Democrats block legislation, investigate the administration and reject judicial nominees.
In short
- Democrats are on course to retake the Senate.
- Historic wins came in Texas and South Carolina.
- Control would give Democrats leverage over Trump’s agenda.
