Denis Villeneuve Chose to Direct New James Bond Movie After ‘Dune 3’ Because ‘I Need a Powerful Rocket to Pull Me Away From Arrakis’
Denis Villeneuve says directing the next James Bond film will give him the change of direction he needs after completing the third and final Dune film. He returned to the franchise because he was tired of it and wanted to approach the material rigorously, without becoming complacent.
Villeneuve has not directed a film outside Dune since 2021’s Part One. Dune: Part Three, based on Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah, is due on 18 December 2026 and follows Paul Atreides’ rise into tyranny; the cast includes Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya. Villeneuve was named director of the next Bond film in June 2025, but no successor to Daniel Craig has been officially announced.
