Denis Villeneuve’s 10/10 Sci-Fi Sequel Has Officially Taken Over the World
Blade Runner 2049, Denis Villeneuve's 2017 sequel to Ridley Scott's original, has become the most-watched film on HBO Max worldwide, according to the platform's rankings. The resurgence comes as anticipation builds for Villeneuve's Dune trilogy finale, and reflects growing interest in the Blade Runner universe ahead of the upcoming Prime Video series Blade Runner 2099. Despite being a box-office flop on release, the film has since been reassessed as one of cinema's finest sequels, buoyed by Ryan Gosling's performance and Villeneuve's reputation as a genre-defining director.
Villeneuve is currently preparing Dune: Part Three, due for release on 18 December alongside Avengers: Doomsday, with Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya and Javier Bardem among the returning cast. Blade Runner 2049 is the 2017 follow-up to Ridley Scott's 1982 film Blade Runner, set in a future Los Angeles where synthetic humans called replicants live alongside people. It was directed by Denis Villeneuve, the French-Canadian filmmaker also known for Arrival, Dune and Dune: Part Two, and stars Ryan Gosling as a replicant-hunting officer investigating a mystery tied to the original film's characters, including Harrison Ford's Rick Deckard.
