A 63-year-old swimmer was killed in a suspected great white shark attack at Perth’s Sorrento Beach, with emergency services continuing to search for his remains on the second day. The incident has prompted beach closures and a rare government order to catch and kill the shark because it is believed to remain nearby and pose an ongoing threat.

The man was swimming about 15 metres from shore with a friend when the attack occurred, witnessed by locals who reported seeing a large pool of blood. Officials believe the untagged shark was more than 3 metres long; strong winds disrupted search efforts, while land patrols and a police vessel continued when conditions allowed. The order is the first of its kind in Western Australia in a decade, and officials said capturing the shark could also help recover evidence for the coronial investigation.
