Despite outrage at Sony’s shift towards a discless future, only seven PlayStation games have managed more than 100,000 physical sales in the US this year

New sales figures shared by analyst Mat Piscatella of Circana have exposed the limited commercial weight of physical media on PlayStation, even as fans loudly protest Sony's plans to phase out disc production. The data suggests physical discs now account for a very small slice of overall game sales, lending credibility to Sony's business rationale for the shift, despite continued backlash from consumers and no sign that the company intends to change course.

According to the Circana Retail Tracking Service, only two PlayStation titles sold more than 10,000 physical copies in the US in the week ending 11th July, and just seven PlayStation games have exceeded 100,000 physical sales in the US so far this year. The figures come amid ongoing criticism of Sony's January 2028 target to end physical disc production, a backlash that has spilled into social media comments on upcoming disc-based titles such as Insomniac's Marvel's Wolverine. Neither Sony nor regulators such as the EU have shown any inclination to intervene, leaving the debate over consumer rights and format preservation unresolved.
