The planned Avengers film featuring Kang the Conqueror dissolved after its lead actor encountered legal difficulties, forcing Marvel Studios to overhaul its long-term villain strategy. Director Destin Daniel Cretton, originally tapped to helm the 2022-announced sequel, described the shift as emotionally challenging, particularly given the concurrent industry strikes that created uncertainty throughout production discussions.

Fearing the cancellation might damage his working relationship with Marvel President Kevin Feige, Cretton was surprised when a replacement opportunity materialised swiftly. The director accepted the helm of Spider-Man: Brand New Day instead, which launched successfully in July 2026 with projections exceeding $180 million. Cretton characterised the transition as less turbulent behind-the-scenes than external observers perceived, with Feige approaching the setback as a planning exercise rather than a permanent rejection.
