Alabama author and architect Jim Hartsell says his son Jake, 33, was killed in an accident while walking home. Hartsell announced the death on X, describing Jake as his best friend and saying the family was devastated; the circumstances have not been made public.

The loss comes five years after Hartsell’s younger son Jordan, a 21-year-old golfer, died from an accidental overdose in 2021. His death was attributed to an interaction involving prescribed Adderall and an opioid pill or Xanax, possibly contaminated with fentanyl, and later became the subject of Hartsell’s book about grief and a journey to Scotland. Jake had shared a close bond with his father through golf and travelled with him in Scotland in 2019; their surviving child is Jonathan, 35.
