Development on a rumoured remake of Final Fantasy IX has reportedly stopped, according to RPG Site editor Alex Donaldson, who commented on the situation via ResetEra. He indicated the project had progressed significantly as a single, standalone release rather than being split into multiple parts, unlike the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, but that it has since stalled for unspecified reasons. This comes as Square Enix continues work on Final Fantasy VII Revelation, and will disappoint fans who had hoped for a similarly ambitious revisit of the classic RPG.

Donaldson noted that Square Enix's Naoki Yoshida had previously made vague hints about the project, including around FF9 tribute content in a recent expansion, but suggested the remake now felt "truly dead" after artwork apparently created for it was instead repurposed for the game's anniversary celebrations. He added that plans could still change, citing a mobile Dissidia title that was revived after being effectively cancelled for a year. Separately, Square Enix recently reported strong Q1 FY2027 financial results, with operating profit up 88.6% year-on-year, driven partly by Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
