Expectant father killed by hit-and-run rubbish truck in Salt Lake City
Juan Matthias Ottoniel, 20, was fatally struck by a privately owned garbage truck while walking home from an extra shift in Salt Lake City, Utah. The driver initially left the scene, and Ottoniel later died in hospital. His death has drawn attention because he was preparing for the birth of his child and working additional hours to support his pregnant wife.
Police identified the driver using surveillance footage, but have not released further details about possible charges. Ottoniel’s workplace, White Horse Spirits & Kitchen, closed briefly for staff to grieve and donated proceeds from a later evening to his family. A GoFundMe has also been set up to help his wife and unborn child cope with the financial impact of his death.
