Diablo 5 Director Confirms Game is Already in Full Production

IGN · 8 hours ago

Blizzard has confirmed that Diablo 5 is already in full production, with the game announced at BlizzCon 2026 for a 2029 release. In an exclusive interview with IGN, Game Director Joe Shely, Narrative Director Jennifer Helper and Production Director Tiffany Wat outlined the sequel's premise and design direction, noting it will run alongside continued support for Diablo 4 rather than replacing it. This matters because it signals Blizzard is committing to long-term parallel development across two mainline entries, while giving Diablo 4 room to continue its own story.

The new game is set 100 years after Diablo 4 in a world where Sanctuary has fallen and Diablo has triumphed, ruling from the throne of Westmarch after conquering the western continent. The developers said Diablo 5 will feature more character classes than any previous entry in the series and will reintroduce procedurally generated overworld and dungeon environments to bring back a sense of unpredictable danger. Because Diablo and his Dread Commanders have destroyed most settlements, the game will move away from Diablo 4's open-world structure, with no towns remaining and a more traditional, structured overworld layout instead.
