Direct train services between Sheffield and Manchester Airport could be reinstated under future Northern Powerhouse Rail improvements. The possibility was raised during parliamentary evidence, but no final service plan has been agreed, meaning passengers may still need to change at Manchester Piccadilly.

The former direct connection was withdrawn in December 2022, affecting links between South Yorkshire, Stockport and the airport. Officials said improved cross-Pennine connections and a new Manchester Airport station could support better services, while the first planned improvements are expected to focus on routes linking Leeds, York, Bradford and Sheffield.
