Discord has launched a revised global age verification system, having previously delayed its introduction due to privacy concerns from users. The new approach prioritises automatic age estimation using account signals rather than requiring manual verification through facial recognition or ID submission. The platform claims this change demonstrates a commitment to balancing teen safety with user privacy and avoiding more restrictive regulatory requirements in the future.

The system automatically places users into one of three age groups—adult, teen, or unconfirmed—based on account characteristics such as how long the account has existed and the types of servers the user frequents. Discord states that over 90 per cent of users will not need to manually confirm their age. For those who do, the platform now offers multiple verification options including credit card verification through Stripe, Google Wallet's ID pass, a reusable credential called AgeKey, and age data from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, depending on location and device type.
