Discord has begun rolling out a revised age verification policy this week, moving away from its earlier plan to require facial recognition or ID scans after community concerns about privacy and data collection. The new approach automatically categorises users into Adult, Teen, or Unconfirmed age groups based on account history, server membership and activity patterns—methods that do not involve accessing messages or calls—addressing user concerns whilst still adhering to broader social media industry trends towards protecting minors.

Approximately 90 per cent of Discord's users will require no further action if correctly categorised, though those placed in the Unconfirmed category can verify their age through multiple privacy-conscious options including credit card verification, app store confirmation, Google Wallet, AgeKey credentials, ID scans or video selfies. Teen users face three restrictions: non-friend messages go to a requests inbox with alerts for suspicious friend requests, they cannot view age-gated content including sensitive images and adult-only servers, and their profile details are only visible to friends and members of smaller communities. Discord has mandated that third-party age verification vendors permanently delete user data after verification and that any facial age estimation be processed entirely on the user's device.
