Calley Means resigns amid reported frustration over stalled food reforms

Ars Technica ·

Calley Means, a senior adviser to Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has resigned from the Trump administration amid reported frustration over stalled food policy changes. His departure adds to tensions within the Make America Healthy Again movement, whose members have criticised Kennedy for failing to deliver on priorities and for appearing too close to corporate interests.

Means said he had helped advance plans including changes to dietary guidelines, removing soda from SNAP benefits and food dyes, and reforming food procurement; he did not state why he was leaving. The Wall Street Journal reported that he blamed industry influence and delays, including the administration’s shelving of proposals on ultraprocessed foods and school meals. Discontent also followed a MAHA summit with corporate sponsors, some reportedly paying up to $300,000.

In short

  • Calley Means has left his White House advisory role.
  • Reports link his departure to stalled food policy changes.
  • Corporate involvement has fuelled wider MAHA discontent.

Steelman: both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

Supporters of the administration could argue that changing national food policy requires careful review, coordination and workable rules, so proposals may need to be delayed or revised rather than rushed. Corporate participation in a summit can also bring funding and practical expertise, and does not by itself show that policy has been captured by industry.

The case against

Critics could argue that delays and the shelving of proposals on ultraprocessed foods and school meals show the administration is failing to act on priorities it promised to pursue. They may see corporate sponsorship and perceived closeness to industry as reasons to doubt whether public health goals are being put ahead of commercial interests.
