Disney Lorcana just revealed its answer to Magic’s Commander format

Polygon · 7 hours ago

Disney Lorcana has unveiled Format Coconut, a codename for a new multiplayer format that borrows broad ideas from Magic: The Gathering’s popular Commander mode. Playtesting began at Gen Con 2026, and the format matters because it is designed to offer a more social, expressive way to play Lorcana beyond standard two-player matches.

Players choose one of 18 designated beta “Coconut” cards, then build a singleton deck of at least 60 cards containing four copies of that chosen card. The format raises the Lore total needed to win and gives each Coconut card an additional format-specific ability; for example, Moana – Curious Explorer can let players ink an extra card if they control Moana, Heihei or Pua. Unlike Commander, Coconut cards are not based on a legendary-card category and are not placed in a separate command zone.

  • Lorcana is testing a Commander-inspired multiplayer format.
  • Decks use 60 or more singleton cards and four Coconut copies.
  • Chosen Coconut cards gain special additional abilities.
