Kingdom Hearts is a series of action role-playing games made by the Japanese company Square Enix in partnership with Disney. It follows a young hero, Sora, as he travels between worlds inspired by Disney films, meeting characters such as Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy.
The games also include characters and ideas from Square Enix’s Final Fantasy series, alongside an original story about friendship, memory and dark forces threatening different worlds. The first game was released in 2002, and the series has since appeared on several consoles and handheld devices.
Disney owns the characters and worlds used in the games, while Square Enix develops them. The series matters commercially because it has kept a large international audience over more than two decades, despite relatively long gaps between major new releases.
