Disney's live-action remake of Moana has been overshadowed at the box office by Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, which opened dramatically stronger in its debut weekend. Moana underperformed on release, taking less than $100 million worldwide, of which only $43 million came from domestic cinemas, placing it alongside recent flops such as Supergirl and Joker: Folie à Deux. The comparison is striking given that both films had identical $250 million production budgets, yet Nolan's epic earned in three days roughly what Disney's remake may struggle to make across its entire theatrical run.

The Odyssey took around $120 million domestically and about $260 million globally in its opening weekend, marking a career-best debut for star Matt Damon and the biggest global opening of Nolan's career, surpassing both Dark Knight films. It has also been very well received, holding a "Certified Fresh" 95% critics' score and a "Verified Hot" 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising its scale and ensemble performances. Moana, by contrast, opened to mediocre reviews, compounding its weak commercial start.
