A Utah mother, Tawnia McGeehan, 38, drugged and fatally shot her 11-year-old daughter, Addi Smith, before killing herself in a hotel room in Las Vegas in February, according to a coroner's report obtained by the Daily Mail. The case has drawn attention because of the disturbing detail revealed in the report, including a handwritten note warning responders of "2 dead bodies", and because it followed a bitter, years-long custody dispute between McGeehan and Addi's father, Bradley Smith.

The Clark County coroner ruled Addi's death a homicide and her mother's a suicide, both caused by gunshot wounds to the head, with a handgun found on McGeehan's body. Toxicology tests found a cocktail of drugs, including an antipsychotic, an antihistamine, a seizure medication and an anti-anxiety drug, in Addi's system, while McGeehan's body contained the same substances plus an antidepressant, an insomnia medication and cannabinoids. Family members told investigators McGeehan had a history of severe depression and prior suicidal thoughts, which reportedly worsened amid a relationship breakup and the ongoing custody battle; the couple, divorced since 2015, had previously been required by court officials to park several spaces apart during custody handovers.
