Variety ·

Doc Stories will open its 12th annual San Francisco festival on 5 November with Ava DuVernay’s documentary “14th”, which examines the promises of the 14th Amendment. The four-day event brings together filmmakers and audiences for documentary screenings and discussions, and is a notable Northern California stop during the Oscar campaign season.

The programme includes 10 feature documentaries contending for Oscars and 11 short films, among them Sam Pollard’s “Tutu” and Laura Poitras and Rachel Lauren Mueller’s “They’re Here”. The 14th Amendment to the US Constitution, adopted after the Civil War, made people born or naturalised in the country citizens and set rules requiring states to provide equal protection under the law. Its meaning and effects have been debated in court cases and public life.

Documentary films use real people, events and evidence to explore subjects, and festivals bring filmmakers and audiences together to watch and discuss them. San Francisco’s Doc Stories is one such event; it also takes place during the period when films are seeking attention from voters in the annual Academy Awards, or Oscars.
