The US Department of Justice has given New Jersey five days to hand over its voter registration data, as officials investigate how thousands of non-citizens came to be registered to vote in the state. Officials say a software error led to roughly 6,600 non-citizens being registered to vote, with Governor Sherrill admitting that as many as 400 of them may have actually cast ballots during former Governor Phil Murphy's tenure. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin has warned the true scale could be far larger, with up to 35,000 non-citizens potentially still on the state's voter rolls. A technology company has reportedly pointed blame back at the state over how the registration error occurred, adding to political pressure on Sherrill's administration.
