DOJ shake-up continues with head of national security division, US attorney in Miami resigning
John Eisenberg, head of the Justice Department’s National Security Division, and Jason Reding Quiñones, the US attorney for Florida’s Southern District, are resigning. Their departures, announced by Attorney General Todd Blanche, bring to three the number of senior DOJ officials to leave since the midterm elections, following Civil Rights Division chief Harmeet Dhillon.
Eisenberg previously served in national security and legal roles during Donald Trump’s first term. Quiñones was known for securing an indictment against former Cuban president Raúl Castro over the alleged role in the 1996 downing of two civilian aircraft, in which four US nationals were killed. Dhillon said she had tried to resign three weeks earlier but was asked to remain until after the midterms; she had led work on issues including religious discrimination, election integrity and transgender participation in women’s sports.
In short
- Two senior DOJ officials are resigning.
- They are the third and fourth senior departures since the midterms.
