The Royal Opera House has revived Kaspar Holten's 2014 production of Mozart's Don Giovanni, restaged with care by Greg Eldridge, and finds its story of a predatory sex addict resonating strongly in the post-#MeToo era. The staging is not set in modern dress but uses semi-stylised costumes and an Escher-inspired revolving set to place the action loosely between 1850 and 1900, relying on striking video projections rather than contemporary styling to draw out present-day parallels, though the production's treatment of its female characters proves less assured than its handling of the title figure.

Video designer Luke Halls' projections, from scrawled conquests on the opening facade to dizzying rotating imagery during the Champagne Aria, dominate the visual concept without overwhelming the drama, aided by Bruno Poet's lighting. Gordon Bintner's Giovanni and Roberto Tagliavini's Leporello anchor a strong cast, with Aigul Akhmetshina singled out as a standout Donna Elvira, while Rachel Willis-Sørensen, Bogdan Volkov, Giulia Semenzato, Dingle Yandell and Andreas Bauer Kanabas complete the ensemble under Stefano Montanari's "punchy" but occasionally uneven conducting.
