Rocket scientist Wernher von Braun helped shape Disney’s Ludwig Von Drake
Disney introduced Ludwig Von Drake, Donald Duck’s eccentric scientist uncle, on television 65 years ago. The character helped explain science and technology to millions of viewers and was partly inspired by the real rocket scientists who shaped public understanding of the early Space Age.
Von Drake’s space presentations reused animation from Disney programmes made in the late 1950s, before human spaceflight, so some claims were speculative by 1963. Wernher von Braun, Heinz Haber and Willy Ley advised Disney on earlier space episodes and influenced Von Drake’s name, knowledge and personality; Disney even accidentally began introducing him as “Professor Wernher von…” before correcting himself.
