Doncaster Rovers manager Grant McCann has revealed he was diagnosed with malignant melanoma, an aggressive form of skin cancer, in December last year. The 46-year-old Northern Irishman disclosed the diagnosis when asked about the pressures of football management, saying it put the demands of his job into perspective, and confirmed he is now well after facing what he described as a potentially life-threatening situation.

McCann said a doctor visited him at the training ground with the news over Christmas, telling him he could have had just five to six weeks to live. He contrasted this genuine pressure with the stresses of management, saying his priority now is ensuring he and his family are well. Doncaster have had a difficult start to their League One season, with three draws and two defeats from their opening five fixtures, and McCann also commented on the sacking of former teammate Michael Duff by Wycombe.
