Greens criticised over inclusive language guidance mocked by Rowling

Daily Mail ·

The Green Party has been criticised over an “inclusive terminology guidance” document advising members to avoid phrases such as “mother and father” in favour of “parents and carers”. It also recommends avoiding some gendered job titles and terms including “nutter”, while warning that repeated or deliberate behaviour may be treated as unlawful harassment.

JK Rowling mocked the guidance, while a party spokesman described it as a standard equalities training document and “a guide and nothing else”. The article also refers to separate training that reportedly encouraged members to record details of jokes they considered discriminatory and to examine the diversity of their social circles.

  • Greens’ guidance recommends “parents and carers” instead of “mother and father”.
  • JK Rowling criticised the terminology advice.
  • The party says the document is guidance, not a rule.
