A Seattle raccoon known as “Jimothy”, whose hunched spine and short tail appear to stem from a congenital condition, has become an internet phenomenon after a video of him went viral. Wildlife experts say his mobility and apparent ability to navigate the city suggest he has adapted, but caution that his condition and lifespan cannot be assessed without examining him; his fame may pose a greater immediate risk if admirers seek him out.

The footage, uploaded on 14 July by Kiana Hall, attracted millions of views and inspired memes, fan art, toys, a civic “Jimothy Summer” and a Seattle Mariners promotional night. Wild raccoons typically live only two to three years, though experts say Jimothy has probably passed his most vulnerable early period and now faces risks including traffic, dogs, coyotes and stress caused by people filming or disturbing him.
