Don’t panic, but there’s a Playdate Update Showcase tomorrow

Engadget · 2 hours ago

Panic will host a "Playdate Update Showcase" livestream on Wednesday 9 September 2026, revealing details of Season 3 for its handheld games console, including a release date and the line-up of games. The timing has raised eyebrows, as the event begins just an hour before Apple's annual iPhone launch event, despite Panic announcing its showcase only 23 hours in advance, meaning the two events will compete for tech and gaming media attention.

The showcase airs at 12pm ET on Panic's YouTube channel and its own livestreaming site. Season 2, launched in May 2025, cost $39 for six weeks of new games delivered twice weekly, and included titles such as Fulcrum Defender, Dig! Dig! Dino! and the cable-TV parody Blippo+, with more than 15,000 purchases recorded. Panic has also drawn praise for refunding customers who paid US import tariffs, unlike rivals such as Amazon, Sony and Nintendo, which face lawsuits over the issue; the Playdate console itself is currently out of stock online but will be sold in person at October's Portland Retro Gaming Expo, with over 80,000 units sold since 2022.

Panic is a small independent software company that also makes Playdate, a pocket-sized handheld games console known for its distinctive black-and-yellow design and hand-crank control. Rather than selling all its games upfront, Panic releases them in themed batches called "Seasons", with a run of new titles delivered over several weeks for a one-off fee.

The company is due to hold a livestream revealing Season 3, the next wave of Playdate games, following on from Season 2's release in May 2025. Playdate has built a loyal niche following since launching in 2022, with more than 80,000 units sold, and Panic has also earned goodwill for reimbursing customers hit by US import tariffs, in contrast to larger rivals.

This matters because the announcement happens to fall close to a major Apple product event, putting a small independent hardware maker in the same news cycle as one of the world's biggest tech companies, which has drawn attention to the timing and to Playdate as a rare example of a niche, community-driven gaming device competing for attention alongside mainstream tech launches.
