Don’t Watch the Brilliantly Disgusting Clayface Trailer While You’re Eating

IGN · 5 hours ago

DC Studios has released a new trailer for "Clayface," offering the first detailed look at Matt Hagen's origin story within James Gunn's DC Universe. The footage leans heavily into body horror, including a widely noted scene of Hagen's eyelids melting shut, positioning the film as a deliberately unsettling counterpoint to the lighter tone of the DCU's Superman and Supergirl instalments.

Directed by James Watkins from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, the film reimagines a Spider-Man-style powers-origin story as body horror rather than heroics. Although Clayface is traditionally a Gotham-based Batman villain, the movie is not connected to Matt Reeves' separate "Batman Epic Crime Saga," which continues with the delayed "The Batman 2" (now due 18 February 2028). James Gunn has not yet cast his own DCU Batman for the upcoming "The Brave and the Bold," and has said he won't discuss it in depth until "The Batman 2" is released, leaving "Clayface" as a standalone entry with unclear ties to the wider DCU. The film is scheduled for release on 23 October 2026.
