Following Microsoft's mass layoffs that hit Doom developer id Software this week, a new report claims the studio had been weighing up several ideas for their next project before the cuts landed. According to Gamesbeat, the pitches under consideration included a new entry in the Perfect Dark series and an original "gun fu" game inspired by John Wick, underscoring the uncertainty now hanging over the studio's future direction.

The report states that id lost 136 workers in the cuts, with the pitches circulating as the team wrapped up Doom: The Dark Ages' Revelations DLC, which released on 7th July. Proposals reportedly included a Perfect Dark game (with concept art said to be in progress), a John Wick-style title codenamed Fury from Dark Ages director Hugo Martin, a wild west robot survival game called Ironwood, and various multiplayer, co-op and DLC options for Doom. Gamesbeat notes it is unclear whether enough staff remain to make any of these, with one laid-off worker saying they were "not convinced there is a viable way forward"; separately, Bloomberg reported the cuts were not a death knell for the Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein series.

Doom is developed by id Software, a long-running studio owned by Microsoft (via its Bethesda/ZeniMax acquisition) best known for the Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein franchises. The studio recently finished the Revelations DLC for its 2025 release Doom: The Dark Ages, and this week it was caught up in wider Microsoft job cuts, losing 136 staff.

Perfect Dark is a separate spy-themed shooter series with its own history, and there is currently a stalled reboot of it being made by another Microsoft-owned studio; a new id Software take on the franchise would be a different, additional project. The "gun fu" idea refers to a style of highly choreographed, close-combat gunplay popularised by the John Wick films, which id had reportedly been considering as inspiration for an original game.

This matters because it shows what id Software was planning for its future just before the layoffs hit, raising questions about whether the studio still has the staff and resources to pursue any of these ideas, or what direction it will take next.
