DOOM’s Developer id Software Has Supposedly Lost Around 50% Of Its Team
Following a major restructuring of Microsoft's gaming division under new Xbox boss Asha Sharma, DOOM developer id Software has reportedly lost around half of its staff. The cuts form part of Microsoft's confirmed plan to eliminate over 3,000 gaming roles within the next 12 months, of which roughly 1,600 have already gone. The scale of the losses at such a storied studio — widely credited as the pioneer of the first-person shooter genre — has drawn considerable concern across the industry.
An official document obtained by Game Developer confirmed 96 redundancies at id's office in Richardson, Texas, plus 40 remote workers reporting to that location, for 136 roles in total. The "roughly 50%" figure was shared by Michael Maynard, a Senior Gameplay Systems Programmer of over 20 years at id, who described the studio being "relegated to just another 'reorganization' of assets". The news follows reports that Bethesda intends to concentrate on its biggest franchises, including id's DOOM and Quake series; id recently released new DLC for DOOM: The Dark Ages, though no Switch 2 version has been announced despite earlier DOOM ports to the original Switch.
