Mackenzie Shirilla, 22, has renewed her legal effort to overturn her convictions for the murders of her boyfriend Dominic Russo, 20, and their friend Davion Flanagan, 19, whom she killed in 2023 by deliberately crashing a car into a building at nearly 100mph. Her lawyers have asked the Ohio Supreme Court to reconsider its rejection of her post-conviction relief petition, which is described as her final avenue for freedom. The move coincides with her support team posting a new prison selfie on Instagram, saying she is "trying to do better every day and holding on to hope".

Shirilla is serving two concurrent sentences of 15 years to life at the Ohio Reformatory for Women, and will not be eligible for parole until September 2037, aged 33. Lower courts previously rejected all her appeals, and the state's highest court denied her in May 2025. Her subsequent post-conviction relief petition was dismissed by the appellate court last month for being filed 366 days after the trial transcript was submitted — one day past the deadline. Her latest motion argues that the filing deadlines were confusing.
