A five-storey residential building housing students, called Hostel Daze, has collapsed in the Satya Niketan area of south-west Delhi, near Delhi University, with dozens feared trapped in the rubble. The incident, which occurred around 13:30 local time on Sunday, has killed at least one person and left two others critically injured, prompting an urgent rescue operation as officials work to reach students who were reportedly calling for help from beneath the debris.

Up to 50 people are believed to have been inside at the time, with six rescued so far. Basement excavation work, reportedly carried out to boost the leaseholder's income, is suspected to have weakened supporting pillars despite the upper structure being reinforced, according to a nearby shop owner. Delhi's chief minister confirmed a neighbouring building was evacuated as a precaution, while police search for the building's owner and a student union has demanded an investigation into responsibility for the collapse.
